Nathan Chen and Chloe Kim secured gold for team USA on their best day at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Chen’s “Rocket Man” performance earned the ice skater his first gold medal. The American athlete soared above the men’s single skating competition and is the first American since 2010 to bring home the gold in the event.

“It means the world. I’m just so happy.” Chen said after his win, he added there were “too many emotions to process.”

The 22-year-old athlete from Salt Lake City, Utah, earned the nickname “Quad King” for landing five flawless quadruple jumps in a single competition. He was a favorite going into the event this week which is no surprise after previously setting a record score in the short program earlier in the week. After coming back from his fifth-place finish in the 2018 Olympics, the accomplishment was huge for Chen.

Chen, who is known for often showing little emotion during his performances, let loose towards the end and started to crack a smile on the ice. The skater more than earned the right when he danced through “Rocket Man” and “Bennie and the Jets,” displaying a series of perfect spins that left the crowd on the edge of their seats.

After receiving an almost perfect score from the judges, Chen said, “I never thought I would actually be able to make this happen. It’s hard. It’s always been a dream, of course. It’s a pretty daunting mountain.”

Chen’s win came on the heels of Chloe Kim’s historic run on the halfpipes. After a short hiatus, Chloe Kim, the snowboarder who had shot to fame at 17 in Pyeongchang, returned to the halfpipe in Beijing to retain her title. She effortlessly defied the rules of physics as she soared through all five of her jumps in the first run to squash the competition and take first place.

“My butt’s a little sore, but other than that, I’m so happy,” Kim said after her run. The athlete became a fan favorite back in 2018 after her candid tweets for being ‘hangry’ before her runs and how to deal with nerves when she wrote on Twitter, “I also had two churros today, and they were pretty bomb so if you ever get nervous go eat a churro.”

The vibrant and energetic athletes helped Team USA have their best day yet at the Beijing games on day six. Team USA also won gold in the inaugural mixed-team aerials in freestyle skiing for the first time since 1998. Athletes Ashley Caldwell, Chris Lillis, and Justin Schoenefeld beat out China’s team with a score of 338.34. Team USA was trailing behind China after the final first run. Still, Chris Lillis had a majestic jump, and China’s Jis Zongyang had points deducted for a maneuver the athlete did following his landing. The deduction helped the U.S. trail ahead for first place. China took home silver in the event.

Hard days at the Olympics are the best days because that is when champions get made. Congratulations, Team USA.
