John Allen’s authorized biography of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutu, is fresh off the press and chapter 9 has a suprising title…
The Jazz Conductor
The following excerpt captures leadership style of Tutu.
"He would say, "Do it. I’m not here to spoon-feed you." Ordinary guys blossomed. Tutu made everybody feel like somebody. Then he would give meaning to what you did and elevate it to a higher level. In that free-flowing style, he was like a jazz conductor…He said, "You improvise." If you do it well, he’ll be happy and boast about it. If you go beyond his bounds, you spoil the whole thing. If you anger him, his wrath would bring you into line."
Jazz…birthed in America, blessing the world.
