Look up at most church buildings that are over a hundred years old and one thing you’ll notice is the bell tower. Now days, if these are ever used, it is for special occasions, holidays, weddings, events like that.
Originally, the bells rang for one simple reason: To call people to worship.
In an age when watches and clocks were rare, the church bell alerted the town’s people that the time for worship had arrived. Farmers would make their way in from the barn; families would trek up Main Street and plant themselves in a pew for the time to worship had arrived.
