I'm pro-life and without a party. I'm a one issue voter and I can't find a party with a platform that fully addresses the sacredness of life in all of its complexity. So I'm pro-life and partyless! Usually the Democrats are thought of as pro-choice and the Republicans as pro-life; therefore, most think that the choice is obvious. To me it's not so black and white.
When I say I'm pro-life I'm referring to what is known as the "seamless garment of life" (aka–"Consistent Life Ethic). Joseph Cardinal Bernardin was one of the early pioneers of this school of thought. The basic premise is that all life is sacred from womb to the tomb–conception to natural death. That being the case a true pro-life stance must protect all life not just some life. For all life is connected–one seamless garment–and needs to be protected in all phases. A consistent life ethic seeks to be on the life side of abortion, embryo/stem cell research, poverty, health care, education, racism, sexism, genocide, AIDS, environmental issues, war, the death penalty and euthanasia.
Eileen Egan first coined the term "seamless garment" when she said, "The protection of life is a seamless garment. You can't protect some life and not others."
So I'm pro-life and partyless…guess I'll have to stick with the Kingdom of God!
