Richard Land, public policy head for the Southern Baptist Convention, took some swipes at Rudy Giuliani saying:
“I mean, this is divorce on steroids,” Land said. “To publicly humiliate your wife in that way, and your children. That’s rough. I think that’s going to be an awfully hard sell, even if he weren’t pro-choice and pro-gun control.
Evangelicals are scared about Giuliani because Christians like him. I was talking to Bill Bennett two nights ago and asked him about listeners’ responses on his radio show. Five to on in favor of Giuliani. Why? People get the sense that Giuliani wouldn’t tolerate screw ups, that he could fix Iraq, that he would be good on terror, that he would fix Katrina problems and Walter Reed problems.
Evangelicals are breaking free from the self-appointed “Christian” political power brokers who have controlled them for the past few decades. That is good news for faith, good news for politics, and bad news for religious political fat cats.
