Today is Day 11 of my 31 Days of Self-Love posts to celebrate Self-Love Month with suggestions for jumpstarting your own self-love.
We all have habits that we don’t like. It could be an addictive one like overeating, or the inability to say “no” when you want to. Breaking habits can take time and patience to achieve but it’s worth the effort when you experience the control it brings. Yes, when you resist doing something unhealthy or that you don’t like doing, you control the habit instead of the habit controlling you. Break your habit one baby step at time, once moment of resisting at a time.
For each thing you resist, give yourself kudos or actually reward yourself by making a habit piggy bank or jar.
Every time you resist buying something unhealthy or fattening to eat or cigarettes or a drink or treating someone to get into their good favor, put the money you’d have spent in a piggy bank or jar. And if the habit you resist doesn’t involve money, like being on time when you’re always late, throw in a few quarters or a dollar. Save up for a trip, an electronic toy you’d like, new clothes or whatever would make you happy. This is a great way to reward yourself and see the fruits of your will power.
Breaking habits that bring you down physically or mentally says, “I love me!” The control you get is empowering, which feeds self-love. So get a real piggy bank or a jar and begin to reward yourself for breaking bad habits. As you see it getting filled, you’ll also feel your self-love grow. Then use the money for something special you’d enjoy.
