Yes, I willOften we do believe that we can do something but do nothing. When my confidence was low, people encouraged me to do things but I didn’t. I knew I was capable but something held me back. Often fear keeps us from going forward. I was pushed to write books but didn’t. I knew I could write well. My teacher in sixth grade wrote in my autograph book, “Someday you’ll be a famous author.” I wrote articles and small things but never a book.

When people asked me, “Can you write a book?” I’d say “Yes.” Then they’d wonder why the book didn’t happen.” But they didn’t ask the right questions.  Yes, I was capable of writing a book. But the key question should have been, “Will you write a book?” That would have been harder to answer. Something held me back. Fear made me unwilling to try. I was scared no one would like my books. Or maybe I’d discover that I actually couldn’t write.

But I wanted to! I actually began writing books but no one ever saw them since I didn’t try to get one published. Eventually I asked myself that key question: “Will I write a book? Am I willing to try?” I thought about it Then I asked myself:

•    “What am I afraid of?” I was scared of failing at writing—that people wouldn’t like what I wrote.
•    “Can I handle my worst fears coming true?” I wouldn’t like to fail but I’d live and learn.
•    “What could trying teach me?” That failing at something doesn’t make you a failure if you keep trying.
•    “What could I gain from trying?” I could get to write for a living!

After considering it I said, “Yes.” Then I said, “YES!” Then I screamed, “YES!” And now I’m on my fourteenth and fifteenth books. Your first step to doing what you’d love begins with answering, “Yes” to “Will I?” Even if what you try for doesn’t work out at first, keep asking, Will I?” And keep going. Learn from what doesn’t work. Instead of it defeating you, let it motivate you to succeed.

So, “Are you capable of doing what you say you want?” Will you try? Work on getting to yes and you’ll find your way to a joyous life.
