It seems like a stretch, a difficulty at best, to consider that it would be possible for us to meet an unwanted moment with a heart that is fully open, and to be able to respond with the realization that it is just something passing through. It has no power other than something in us that wants to attend to it — to make a problem out of it or to find a pleasure in it. In such a moment, the heart shuts down and fear moves in. Attachment and dependency replace the possibility of being present to a completely different order of our own being and the possibility of realizing the lesson that life would teach us.
