The other morning I was in the kitchen putting the dishes away when Caidin came in. He had his Wisdom Cards in his hand and he said, ‘I haven’t used these in a while. I pulled two cards: Speaking and Create.’

Inside I was so happy that he had turned to the cards without my suggestion, but at this age, I’ve learned, you don’t go overboard with the excitement.

I said, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. What did you take from those two cards?’ He said, ‘I’m not sure. Speaking, is about giving a speech?’ ‘Could be,’ I said. ‘Sometimes I take it to mean how I speak, or to pay attention to how I am speaking.’ ‘Well that would make sense,’ he said.

‘What about create? Do you think the two cards go together?’

He thought for a minute and he said, ‘If speaking means to pay attention to how I’m speaking, maybe create is connected to that too, like, if I use mean words, I’ll create something I don’t like.’

Ding, ding, ding..

How wonderful to see Caidin come to that insight, for the most part, on his own.

This is exactly what I’ve been talking to him about for weeks: how his tone can make people (me) respond to him positively or negatively (signs of teenager-dom rising at almost nine years old.)

It was a moment of seeing that everything I’ve talked to him about over the years, and that my beliefs and the way I live my life, are in there somewhere.

As parents, that’s what we hope for, that our guidance and insight are in there, just waiting for that moment when mind and information connect and our children embrace our beliefs as their truth, not simply as something they hear us say over and over again.

I’ll admit, it made me feel good.
