What do Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day have in common? They are holidays that legislate feelings and encourage (require) us to spend lots of money. In the case of Valentine’s Day that will be here in two weeks, love is the legislated feeling. This strikes me as being odd, perhaps even bizarre.
What have we come to as a culture where we need a holiday such as Thanksgiving to re
mind us to be grateful and a holiday such as Valentine’s Day to remind us to be romantic?
