Intention is an important mental factor that accompanies every waking moment. It moves us toward objects of perception and plants the seed of future action. Intention asks the question, “What is my aim here?” Attention, a close relative of intention, keeps us focused on that aim as we work toward it. If we don’t bring awareness to what we are doing in the moment, we will be pushed hither and thither by conditions. Having a firm intention, setting clearly defined aims for our practice, helps us to keep our attention on task.
