Anya and a Spring Chicken

How we talk around here:

“Lydia, can you please go tell the chickens I need three more eggs to make a dozen?”

(few minutes later)

“Mom, here’s two and I told Red Rhoda we needed one more and she said, ‘she’s on it!’.”

I remember a few years ago I was fixing Thanksgiving dinner and realized I was two eggs short for the yummy sweet potato casserole. I ran down to the coop…pulling my hood up to protect my cold ears…and stood by the nesting box, begging: “Please, Girls…just two more eggs?” At that moment Mrs. Stripe, the sweet little Silver Leghorn hen, responded with “bawk! bawk!” and laid an egg in my hand. Yes. Really.
