WASHINGTON – A majority of Americans asked said they support allowing civil unions for same-sex couples, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll indicated.
A record 55 percent of people in the United States polled said they support such unions to give same-sex couples the same inheritance, pension and health insurance rights as married couples, the poll said. In a 2006 poll, 45 percent of those asked said they supported such civil unions.
A majority of polled Americans, 55 percent, also expressed support for legal abortion, a figure that’s remained consistent for five years.
The poll results have a 3 percentage points margin of error. A total of 1,131 adults were polled by telephone from Oct. 29-Nov. 1.
