Singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in Camden, north London, at the age of 27.

Winehouse joins a long list of rock singers who met their demise at age 27, including Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.

The London Ambulance Service was called to her apartment just after 4 p.m. on Saturday, but emergency workers were unable to save her life, according to Sky News, whose sources said the singer was “beyond help” when paramedics arrived.

“On arrival, officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene,” a police statement said.

Officially her death was listed as “unexplained” pending an autopsy.

Singer Michelle Gayle told Sky News that Amy’s father Mitch was “devastated.”

A number of rock singers have died at 27, prompting the term “the 27 Club.”

Brian Jones, a founding member of the Rolling Stones drowned at 27 on July 3, 1969. Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose at age 27 on October 4, 1970, after recording classics such as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Mercedes Benz” and “Piece of My Heart.”

Guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix of “Purple Haze” fame had overdosed on pills only a few days earlier in a London apartment on September 18, 1970. Jim Morrison of the Doors died at 27 less than a year later leaving behind such rock classics as “Light My Fire” and “People Are Strange.”

Ronald “Pigpen” McKernan, a founding member of the Grateful Dead, died at 27 on March 8, 1973. Pete Ham, the lead singer of the Beatles soundalike band Badfinger committed suicide on April 24, 1975.

The Seattle grunge group Nirvana’s lead singer Curt Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 27 on April 5, 1994.

Winehouse had cancelled all tour dates and engagements last month after a series of puzzling public appearances. In Belgrade, Yugoslavia, she suffered the indignity of being booed off the stage.

Plans for her funeral services are pending.
