Chaos erupted at a Texas elementary school when a parent dressed as the Easter bunny passed out condom-filled eggs to students. Some of the students received candy, while some parents were horrified to see their children’s eggs were filled with condoms.
The incident occurred after a parent went to the school to pick up their child and decided to put on the bunny suit and hand out candy. The parent was bombarded by children eager to receive treats from the Easter bunny, and when she, a pharmacist, ran out of candy, she called her husband to bring her more candy-filled eggs. Her husband made the mistake of not checking the eggs as his wife was also taking part in a safe-sex clinic. He grabbed the eggs filled with condoms instead.
Parents were upset with one parent posting, “Not sure this is the Austin weird I signed up for.” The parent said he didn’t feel the incident was a political move but that there were definitely dumb decisions made, possibly referring to the fact the eggs were never checked.
The parent handing out the eggs were never given approval prior to the event, so the school district is now reviewing its safety protocols. It’s possible any event will now need to go through different channels, including getting approvals, treats checked by staff, etc., regardless of how small or large it may be. The situation just goes to show how easily mistakes can be made, and with children involved there just be little to no room for errors.
A spokesperson for the school district put out a statement telling reporters, “We are working to review our safety protocols to ensure this does not happen again. It was an incredibly careless and inappropriate action of a parent.”
The parent was told to leave, but she opted to just move off-campus and still continued passing out the eggs to the children. It’s unclear if she was aware of her mistake by then or if she knew she was passing out the inappropriate eggs. She is now under investigation and officials will decide if any charges will be pressed.
The principal quickly issued an email to parents apologizing for the incident and acknowledging it was an “inappropriate nature of their activity” and assured parents it was not planned or sanctioned by the school by any means.
One of the district’s representatives confirmed the children at the school are not learning anything related to “human sexuality or responsibility.” Children probably had a lot of uncomfortable questions for their parents. The smaller children were likely oblivious to what they received.
Hopefully, the district will institute new policies that will keep incidents like this from happening in the future.
