Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway, known for her roles in films like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Princess Diaries,” said last week on “The View” that abortion is just “another word for mercy.”

The 39-year-old celebrity told the co-hosts of the ABC talk show that abortion is necessary for women’s health and professional advancement. Hathaway spoke of her “personal experience with abortion” when she said the life-ending procedure “can be another word for mercy.”

“We don’t know,” she said emphatically. “We know that no two pregnancies are alike, and it follows that no two lives are alike; it follows that no two conceptions are alike.”

“So how can we have a law — how can we have a point of view on this — that says we must treat everything the same?” continued the actor. “When you allow for choice, you allow for flexibility, which is what we need in order to be human.”

The “Les Miserables” star made the remarks after co-host Joy Behar asked her to riff on an Instagram post the celebrity published just days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision that gave nationwide legal cover to abortion access. During her segment on “The View” — and in the Instagram post — Hathaway retrofitted a pro-abortion storyline onto “The Devil Wears Prada,” which debuted in theaters June 30, 2006.

“I played a young woman who was starting out her career,” she said of the film, loosely based on a real-life assistant’s gig with famous Vogue editor Anna Wintour. “And when you are a young woman starting out your career, your reproductive destiny matters a great deal. And I just — it had just happened, and I just — I think about it all the time. I think we all think about it all the time, and what the implications are, and what it means to live in a country that puts us in this position.”

Hathaway later added her support for abortion is “not a moral conversation.” “This is a practical conversation about women’s rights, and, by the way, human rights, because women’s rights are human rights,” she claimed.

At another point during her appearance on the ABC show, the celebrity said the high court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, a result of the justices’ ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, has undoubtedly caused “some 16-year-old’s life” to be “irrevocably changed.”

It is worth pointing out, though, that the overturning of Roe did not universally outlaw abortion. Instead, it returned the issue to the states. While several states have banned or restricted abortion, others have codified the terminating procedure into their state constitutions. For example, Vermont recently codified the procedure into its state constitution.

Anne Hathaway believes that abortion is a synonym for mercy and shared her personal experience with abortion. Some believe abortion is a moral issue, but people should also consider it a health issue. With the decision now in the hands of the states, hopefully, they will decide to remember that abortion is also a health issue.
