Harrison Butker, kicker for Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs, made a statement with his choice of wardrobe at the team’s White House visit earlier this month. The team was celebrating their February Super Bowl win at the White House and posed for pictures with President Joe Biden. Butker can be seen in the background with a custom-made tie with the words “Vulnerari Praesidio.” It is a Latin phrase which means “Protect the most vulnerable.” The tie was designed by the pro-life group Live Action. He also wore a pin that was the size of a 10-week-old aborted baby’s feet. IHE Voices posted pictures of Butker with the tie and pin. Butker spoke to the Daily Signal about his wardrobe choice, saying, “I want to give the most vulnerable, the unborn, a voice at a place where every effort has been made to allow and normalize the tragic termination of their lives. As a father who has experienced three miscarriages, my wife and I understand the hardships that come with losing a child. Every life is precious and should be valued whether outside or inside the womb.”
Butker is a devout Catholic and shared his faith with EWTN News after making the Chiefs’ winning field goal. “I’m not just making kicks so that I can make money, and I can puff myself up as this great person that people want to be like one day. I’m making kicks because God wants me to have a platform, at least for right now, to share this message of faith, of growing in virtue, of growing closer to the sacraments and of being a saint,” he said. He also spoke about his love for his wife and two children. When asked if he would be partying with other members of his team after his Super Bowl win, he responded, “if that’s not going to glorify God if that’s not going to get us closer to sainthood, then why are we doing it?” He went on to add, “I don’t allow [the fame] to get to my head and change the way I view myself because I’m a child of God. I’m a sinner. I need a savior, I need Jesus, I need the sacraments, and prayer grounds me. And then, again, always coming back to my vocation and knowing that that job is way more important than kicking a football.”
Butker’s wardrobe is a rebuttal against President Biden, who is also a professing Catholic. President Biden has voiced his support for abortion rights throughout his presidency, calling last June’s overturning of Roe vs. Wade “a sad day for the Court and for the country.” In his latest State of the Union address, he vowed to codify abortion law into the Constitution and promised: “to protect every woman’s constitutional right to choose.” He also vowed to veto any attempts Congress made to pass a national abortion ban. Live Action’s founder, Lila Rose, criticized President Biden’s stance on abortion, saying, “President Biden is a professing Catholic who, as the most powerful man in the world, is responsible for leading the most pro-abortion administration in our history that has overseen a horrific death toll of 2,548 children every day lost to abortion.”
