The body of a 16-year-old Georgia teen was recently found after the teen was reported missing from a church camp he attended on Jekyll Island. The Brunswick News reported that Connor Mathis was found in the water at the island’s south end after an almost 20-hour search with hundreds of volunteers and multiple law enforcement agencies.

In a statement, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office said, “It is with regret that the 16 year old missing juvenile, Connor Mathis from Brunswick, Georgia, has been located deceased in the surf on Jekyll Island this morning. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, along with The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, numerous law enforcement and Fire/Rescue Agencies, along with hundreds of volunteers conducted the search for the missing teenager. The Deputies on Camden County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol boat, which was equipped with sonar, discovered the body of the missing youth in the surf off the Jekyll Island Beach. Our condolences to the Connor Mathis family.”

Officials said Mathis was attending a church camp on the island and was reported missing after he didn’t show up as campers regrouped from afternoon activities. Volunteers showed up to help the Georgia State Patrol and other local, state and federal agencies search for the teenager. It’s not immediately known how the teen died.

According to officials, Mathis had high-functioning autism, and some searchers said that his autism prompted them to join the search. Erica Johnson, who gave up part of her vacation to join the search, told the outlet, “I have a cousin who has autism. I hope anybody would do it for him.”

Connor was a rising 11th-grade student at Glynn Academy. The school said it will have counselors to speak with for the next few days. Jekyll Island is located within the Golden Isles in Glynn County, off the coast of Georgia. Please keep Connor Mathis’ family in your prayers.
