As another pride month unfolds during June, an Orlando hotel is under fire for a bondage-themed display that was visible to children. The conservative watchdog, Libs of TikTok, shared images of a hot pink bear wearing fetish clothing outside the Crowne Plaza Orlando – Lake Buena Vista hotel. “This blow-up bear in b*ndage gear is sitting outside the @CrownePlaza in Disney Springs,” wrote the account. Although the hotel is not associated with Disney, it is just two miles away from the Disney Springs area, which is filled with children on summer vacation at this time of year. “We called the hotel and they told us it was for a private pride event but that the bear will remain up throughout the entire weekend. @CrownePlaza why are you subjecting young children to looking at a b*ndage teddy bear? Disgusting,” wrote Libs of TikTok. By Sunday, the pink teddy bear appeared to have been moved indoors. Yet a bondage themed bunny could be seen in the pool area during a party on Sunday.

Inappropriate displays have become the backbone of pride celebrations throughout the years. Last year, Target received backlash for pride displays including “tucking” swimsuits for transgender individuals in the children’s section. This year, the store announced its Pride themed merchandise would be available online and at select stores. RuPaul’s Drag Race featured a display celebrating double mastectomies. The act featured a shirtless drag queen with two scars over his chest to indicate a double mastectomy while holding a bloody bag of breast tissue. Some conservative groups are pushing back against pride displays, with the Colorado Republican Party encouraging followers to burn pride flags. A South Dakota gay-affirming Methodist church was vandalized with the word “ABOMINATION.” The popular YouTube star, Ms. Rachel, whose videos are aimed at children in pre-school, is facing calls for a boycott from conservatives after she promoted Pride month on her platform.

The pushback against pride has increased with the growing numbers of LGBTQ-identifying adults, which had reached a record-high 7.6 percent in 2023, with 30 percent of Gen Z women identifying as LGBTQ. School libraries are being put on blast for carrying books that encourage LGBTQ lifestyles to young children. Libs of TikTok featured a supposed elementary teacher sharing on TikTok what types of books teachers could to read to their classes to support pride month. “A 2nd-grade teacher in Massachusetts shows off Pride books she reads to her students teaching them that they can become transgender,” wrote Libs of TikTok. “These are the people in charge of educating our children.”
