On June 29th, Manuel and Dulce Gonzalez were celebrating what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of their lives before tragedy struck. According to various local news outlets, the Missouri newlyweds were celebrating in their backyard wedding reception when two masked gunmen entered the party, shooting Manuel in the head. “As one of the men was going through peoples’ pockets, the armed man stood behind the victim, a 32-year-old Hispanic man, with the guns pointed at the man. At some point a shot was fired and the 32-year-old man was shot. Both suspects ran away on foot. EMS transported the 32-year-old man to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition.” St. Louis police said in a press release.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the family where they stated that their two young children were also present, but did not specify if they were injured. They asked for prayers and donations to the family as they navigate the medical bills and loss of income during his recovery. They provided an update on the page saying, “[He] is still sedated while we’re waiting for the swelling to decrease. Otherwise, his vitals are strong. Dulce has been by his side every day. Please continue to keep the family and the children in your prayers. They have a long road ahead of them.”
“He’s a good father. A good husband to my sister. He’s a hard worker,” Yaribeth Peña, the bride’s sister, told Fox2. “He’s just an all-around good person that, I don’t know, he didn’t deserve this.” According to KSDK-TV, Peña believes the gunmen shot her brother-in-law “as he was going for his wallet and maybe they thought he was going for a weapon.”
According to police, the suspects fled the scene on foot. Family members reported that the gunmen left without taking any valuables. The investigation remains ongoing and no arrests have been made.
