A U.K. man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after secretly administering abortion drugs to a pregnant woman, causing a miscarriage without her knowledge or consent.

Stuart Worby, 40, from Dereham, Norfolk, was convicted for his calculated and callous actions against the unnamed victim, who was 15 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident in July 2022. The Guardian first reported on the devastating case, which has left the woman struggling to cope with the loss.

“This pain will never leave me knowing that this baby could have been my only chance to be a mother in this lifetime,” the woman expressed in her victim impact statement, adding that she felt she had failed to protect her unborn child. She further shared that, despite visiting multiple fertility clinics since the incident in 2022, she has been unable to become pregnant again, telling the jury, “Being a mother was a dream to me.”

Prosecutor Edmund Vickers said that it was “quite clear” the woman “wanted to have a baby.” He strongly condemned the 40-year-old Worby’s actions as “deliberate, well-planned, and callous.”

“The victim, who had wanted to keep her baby, was unknowingly given the pills and immediately had to go to the bathroom, feeling sick, experiencing diarrhea, and starting to bleed,” authorities said. “She then went to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and, after enduring hours of pain and blood loss, suffered a miscarriage and required surgery.”

According to the Norfolk Constabulary, the man purchased doses of mifepristone and misoprostol—two drugs that induce abortion—in July 2022 for about $600. He was assisted in acquiring the drugs by Nueza Cepeda, a 39-year-old resident of Dereham.

The court determined that Cepeda was involved due to pressure and badgering from Worby. As a result, Cepeda was sentenced to 22 months in prison, with the sentence suspended for two years because of her role in the crime.

During the sentencing, Justice Joel Bennathan remarked, “You are a selfish man and set about aborting the baby without [the woman] knowing.” Along with the prison term, the judge issued an indefinite restraining order to prevent Worby from contacting the woman.
