Hey dude. Have a seat. We need to talk.
Wait, there aren’t any women around are there? Good. This is going to be strictly guy talk here today. You may have noticed that a lot of women seem to be very angry recently about —
Yeah okay, don’t roll your eyes at me. We’re not getting into politics. What I’m talking about has come to the forefront of the news recently because of politics but that isn’t why I’m talking to you. I’m talking to you because guys hate it when women are angry at them. And we guys in general love it when women aren’t yelling at us and we can be useful by fixing something. Isn’t fixing stuff great? So: let’s fix this.
I’m assuming you know that sexual assault is wrong. I’m also guessing that you know that belittling women or victimizing them is simply not cool. But what can a guy do about it? Yeah, I know you’re “one of the good ones,” but still, this is a bad thing that must be addressed. Fortunately, there is something you can do. Yes, you buddy, even though you insist you’ve never done anything wrong or bad like that in the first place.
I’m here to tell you to be a man. Specifically, I’m referring to a thing called “The Divine Masculine.”
…Yeah, me too, that term sounds a little too creepy and New Age-y for my taste, so let’s call it “Elevated Dude-ness.”
Elevated Dude-ness has absolutely nothing to do with picking on someone who is in a position of less power than you, because of what society expects from them because of their gender. Some more things that Elevated Dude-ness is not:
- Disbelieving someone who claims a crime was committed against them because “they took too long to report it.”
- Dismissing a woman’s testimony about assault or harassment because of your own personal or political viewpoints.
- And when the subject comes up? Elevated Dude-ness is definitely not a matter of automatically reacting to all this rage by saying things like “some women lie” or “there is no proof yet” or “she’s being motivated by some outside force to lie about it” or “some men are victims too.” Yeah, theoretically some of those things can all either be true or possible sometimes. Now shut up with that. You know very well that this is a real problem and that it needs to be addressed.
Elevated Dude-ness is when a guy lives up to the best and highest ideals that are traditionally associated with masculinity.
Have you ever seen what a herd of bison do when they’re attacked by a pack of wolves? Probably not, because we do a pretty good as hunters and we nearly wiped them out. Anyway, when a herd of bison are attacked by a pack of wolves, all the young bison are gathered together in the middle of the herd. And then the females form a defensive ring, heads facing out, around the young ones.
And then do you know what the male bison do? They don’t whine. They don’t debate. They form a protective ring around the females.
That’s Elevated Dude-ness. Be more like that.
