(This is part of the “Ask An Astrologer” series, where I occasionally try to demonstrate how getting a consultation can genuinely help and provide real guidance, using real-life examples. Want to find out for yourself? There’s a link to my e-mail at the bottom of this blog entry.)
LK writes: Please, I really need help. I wouldn’t normally do this – I try to study and dig ever deeper on my own – but I’m completely lost right now. And honestly, I’m not even sure if you can help me or if I just need a therapist or something.
The last 2.25 years have been REALLY hard, filled with many ups and downs including prolonged periods of unemployment. I’m very intelligent and capable, but I don’t know how to exercise my power. There is so much untapped potential, but it’s been blocked by a lengthy history of trauma and consequent mental health issues. How can I unblock my potential? Is there anything to look forward to in the near future? I really need some hope. I need some advice.
I know I have so much going for me, but I have no confidence in my abilities. All I want to do is help people (and be involved in politics), but I can’t get myself to take care of my own needs. Like, I can’t conceptualize that *I* am worth my time.

You ask a lot of good questions here, and I hope to be able to answer them all to your satisfaction.
First of all, if you feel you would benefit from seeing a therapist, don’t let me or anyone else talk you out of it. Astrologers often find themselves performing the functions of a therapist, but unless the astrologer in question is also a qualified and licensed therapist, that can sometimes be a bit of a dead end and not of that much use. When it comes to long-standing mental health or emotional issues, think of an astrologer as being like a battlefield medic. He or she will keep you alive long enough to get to the hospital, and may even be able to fix your problem. But if it turns out you need surgery, he or she should leave the actual surgery to a surgeon.
Now, with the disclaimer out of the way, on to answering your questions.
You may have noticed by now that you have a Sun-Moon square in your birth chart. That in and of itself is no guarantee of trauma and mental health issues, as you say, but it can certainly be a contributing factor. You also have Saturn conjunct Neptune, and this aspect often contributes to trauma and a feeling of woundedness. Having Jupiter conjunct Chiron opposite that point isn’t helping either.
(And while we are at it, you said you want to help people. If that isn’t Moon in Pisces talking, I don’t know what it is. Good for you! We need more like you here.)
These are all aspects in your natal chart. It’s worth keeping in mind that the natal chart is not either a guarantee or a curse. Obstacles can be overcome. The transits indicate times when things may feel worse, but they also indicate times when things can be made better. Lucky you — you are approaching this time.

As far as your transits go, the primary problem in the last couple of years has been Neptune passing over your Moon and square your Sun. This particular transit is going to take the natural emotional sensitivity of Moon in Pisces and turn it up to eleven. And your Saturn Return in the last few months hasn’t exactly helped things. Fortunately that transit is pretty much behind you.
The Neptune transit is a slow one, but it is pulling out of range now. Because of a retrograde, you’ll be feeling similar pressures in the last 2 months of this year and into early 2020. But after that point you’ll be free and clear, and transiting Neptune will be trine Mars in your birth chart. That transit will give you a remarkable ability to use all of your inherent sensitivity and plow through and get some real lasting results.
As for finding work? Transiting Jupiter is headed towards the conjunction with your Midheaven. You’ll really begin to feel this starting at the end of this month and heading through until about June, and it will come back for a return visit in November. this is not just good news for finding a job, but in fact for finding a real career or a calling. You may or may not have any clear idea at this time what your dream job would be, but put some thought into it and look around. A Jupiter transit like this can do wonders.
So: understand that the difficult transits you have gone through in the last couple of years are more behind you than ahead of you, and that helpful and constructive transits are coming up soon.
You are worth the time. If you need help, reach out for help. Your sensitivity is actually a gift, and the ability to endure the things you have experienced can act as a superpower to ultimately help others.
NEXT TIME: Some more practical guidance from the natal chart. See how much we can cover in a reading?
