matthew currie astrology facebookAt approximately noon on March 13th, 2019, the world ended.

Well okay, maybe not the world. But that was when Facebook and some of the associated social media sites owned by it (Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp) began to crash and fail throughout North and South America and much of Europe. As of this writing, the problems continue.

The astrology behind this is fascinating. Facebook was born on October 28 2003 at 11:09 PM, when Mark Zuckerberg sat down in room H-33 in Kirkland Hall dormitory at Harvard and typed in the words “Yea, it’s on” (a special tip of the hat to astrologer Jamie Partridge for this information).

Whatever you might want to make of Facebook’s “personality” based on the birth chart (one could argue that a person with Sun conjunct Mercury in Scorpio and Moon conjunct Pluto in Sagittarius might be both prone to collecting secret data and then spreading it around behind everyone’s back, and so on), the astrology around the time of today’s major crash is incredibly instructive.

Yes, Mercury is still quite retrograde, thank you very much. The transiting Moon at the time of the crash was in Gemini (which is ruled by Mercury), and was within three degrees of the square to Neptune in Pisces. That, in and of itself, isn’t necessarily a recipe for disaster. Facebook is also experiencing the tail end of its Saturn opposition and of transiting Mars squaring Facebook’s natal Neptune.

What really puts the glitchy frosting on this cake is that it happened when Uranus was exactly conjunct Facebook’s Midheaven — within a minute of arc to be exact. That transit in and of itself could be disruptive for Facebook’s business model, and somehow I suspect the today’s issues will result in something more than just a simple review of internal policy. Given the recent voices in the political arena wanting to have Facebook’s monopoly on social media, today could have longer-lasting implications than simply “a bad day.”

Uranus brings unusual circumstances. In this case, because of Facebook’s failure, I find myself ejected into a strange and unusual world. It’s a place full of people who aren’t obsessed with amusing pet videos. I’ve been interacting with the people there all day long and I have yet to have my political beliefs mocked, and amazingly I have yet to see a single complex issue reduced to a single misleading meme.

it’s weird here man, but I’m starting to like it. I just may spend more time in this place. And when in doubt? I’m @matthewcurrie on Twitter.
