When I was your age, I had to crawl through three miles of broken glass every day just to get to school and back!
Okay, that’s obviously not true. That’s just an example of what older people say to younger people when the old ones think the young ones are spoiled or dumb or useless or whatever.
Here is a more accurate account of my youth: when I was young, the older generation generally thought my generation was spoiled and dumb and useless…. And for the most part, they were wrong.
Does any of that sound the least bit familiar, my Millennial friends?

There is an article at topic.com entitled The Fault in Their Stars by Lauren Markham making the rounds lately among the astrological community, in which we learn the story of a certain popular young astrologer (no names please!). She’s 26 years old and recently quit her job as an editorial assistant at Vogue Australia to become a full-time astrologer.
“It’s amazing what can change in a year… last December the only astrological knowledge I had was through my weekly horoscope,” she said.
Four months later, and she’s making a living full-time as an astrologer. And hey, her astrology memes on Instagram have thousands of followers!

Most of you probably already know where I’m going with all this. I’ve had a bit of fun with astrology and Millennials here once before. Okay, maybe twice. But I’ve always done my level best to avoid looking like one of those grumpy old men yelling at the new astrologers to get off his lawn.
There has been an explosion in the last year or so in the amount of astrological material on the internet. Unfortunately, like most things on the internet, there isn’t a heck of a lot of depth there. Interest has grown in astrology lately, and naturally the internet has fed into that. There’s a buck to be made after all.
But imagine a world in which America has only recently come to love Mexican food, and as a result, for every new half-decent Mexican restaurant that opens up, a dozen Taco Bells appear.
Ugh.

Maybe it’s because I’m past my Chiron return, or maybe it’s because I’m having my Pluto Trine, but I have come to the conclusion that one can make a conscious choice between being a Wise Elder or being a Grumpy Old Codger. I have chosen the strive for the former path rather than the latter, so in that light I address this to the 26 year old full-time professional (ahem) astrologer out there who’s now making a fabulous living working fabulous parties and making fabulous Instagram posts about it all:
Keep studying and learning. Time and experience can usually make a good astrologer a better one. Astrology is complicated, just as life in the real world is complicated. The moment you think you’ve got everything figured out is probably the moment you start being wrong about things, regardless of your age. So stay honest with yourself and your craft, and keep studying and keep learning. Grow deeper, not wider.
Besides, if you don’t? There are a few wide-eyed 26 year olds out there right now carefully studying and working with astrology who realize that doing it properly is damned hard work. Those will be the astrologers who are blowing the doors off of your practice in a few years if you’re not careful — not me.
Now,all of you, go away. It’s time for my nap.
