(Wondering what 2020 holds in store for you? Write me with your date, time, and place of birth — and send you a free sneak preview!)
Like all years, 2020 will give us a number of planetary retrogrades. You’ve undoubtedly heard all about the effects of Mercury retrograde — the communication issues, the broken elevators, getting lost on your way to the corner store, and so on.
Other than the Sun and Moon though, all of the planets in astrology experience retrogrades. In general however, the further a planet is from the Sun, the less emphasis I put on the idea that a retrograde planet is somehow “impaired.” Pluto can be retrograde for five months at a time, and during that time, how many people spring out of their coffins because they “died incorrectly”?
Here are the planetary retrogrades for 2020. You’ve been warned!
MERCURY
Mercury undergoes three retrograde periods in 2020. Because of the relatively high significance of these times, I’m also listing the “shadow period,” which is the time Mercury spends crawling back to the point at which the retrograde started. These periods can be treated as “mini retrogrades,” when Mercury matters are more straightforward, yet more likely than average to go wobbly.
February 17-March 9, 2020
12 degrees Pisces – 28 degrees Aquarius
(shadow period until March 30th)
June 18-July 12, 2020
14 degrees Cancer – 5 degrees Cancer
(shadow period until July 26)
October 14 – November 3, 2020
11 degrees Scorpio – 25 degrees Libra
(shadow period until November 20th)
VENUS
Venus retrograde doesn’t usually get the same attention as Mercury retrograde. None the less, it can be a time when investments are made less wisely, money disappears more easily, and you’re more likely to hear from an ex.
May 13 – June 25, 2020
21 degrees Gemini – 5 degrees Gemini
(Noteworthy: this retrograde begins with Venus in a close square to Neptune. Hide your heart and hide your wallet!)
MARS
September 9 – November 13, 2020
28 degrees Aries – 15 degrees Aries
This retrograde is noteworthy for two reasons. First of all it takes place in Aries, which Mars rules. This means that for good or ill it is likely to have a particularly strong effect. Second, during this time Mars will be squaring the degrees of the Saturn-Pluto conjunction and of the January 10th Eclipse Point at 20 Cancer.
JUPITER
April 10 – August 11, 2020
24 degrees Capricorn – 14 degrees Capricorn.
As with Mars this year, the retrograde happens in the Sign this planet rules, making for potentially stronger effects. That, and it spends much of this retrograde with a sextile to Neptune… that can’t be ALL bad, can it?
SATURN
May 10 – September 28, 2020
2 degrees Aquarius – 25 degrees Capricorn
*sigh* Saturn. Oy.
URANUS
August 15, 2020 – January 14, 2021
10 degrees Taurus – 6 degrees Taurus
If you have any important placements in your chart between 3-13 degrees of the Fixed Signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius), then this is the second (and possibly toughest) of the hits you’ll be taking from Uranus.
NEPTUNE
June 22 – November 28, 2020
20 degrees Pisces – 18 degrees Pisces
PLUTO:
April 25 – October 4, 2020
24 degrees Capricorn – 22 degrees Capricorn
