It was less than three months ago when I last wrote about Chadwick Boseman. At that time there was a lot of speculation about his absence from the public stage, and his sudden and dramatic weight loss. I speculated that this was as a result of his Uranus Opposition, combined with transiting Neptune conjunct his natal Moon and square his natal Mercury. Clearly this was a time of great stress in his life.

Of course, we didn’t know at the time that he was experiencing the late stages of colon cancer, did we?

I don’t have much more to say about the astrology of this matter. Rather, I’d like to address astrology itself. I always do my best to take a practical approach to astrology. I’m not one of those astrologers who spends a lot of time talking about the power of symbolism or about archetypes. But I have to admit that the power of symbolism is inextricable from astrology. We aren’t computers. Our operating system does not consist of zeros and ones. We run on symbols and stories.

Chadwick Boseman, as Black Panther, became a living symbol of hope and pride for many. Even though Black Panther was one of my favorite superheroes since I was a kid, his performance in that role has permanently stamped itself onto my image of the character.

But in the world besieged by Mars square Saturn and Pluto, should we really be focused on mythology? Is that really wise?

We need to be logical and focused at a time like this, more than ever. But we also need uplift. We need our heroes and their symbolism as a guide to get us through this.

Like many of you I got the news yesterday evening that Chadwick Boseman had died. This morning, like many of you, I logged on to Facebook to see what others were saying. Maybe to find some comfort and understanding. And when I went to on the first item in my news feed was praising the “heroism” of…

Kyle Rittenhouse.

Yes. Really.

I had to suppress a moment of actual, physical nausea.

Choose your mythology wisely. It will shape who you are and what kind of world you live in. We all have heroes and villains and gods and monsters inside of us whether we realize it or not. These stories can help us overcome obstacles and be better people. Yes, even in a world where the real villains and monsters turn out to be something like racism, or anger… or colon cancer.

Wakanda Forever.
