Michael J. Fox recently announced his retirement from acting due to his ongoing struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Although the disease itself progresses very slowly, at this point he no longer feels he is able to keep working. This will be a two-part series looking at the astrology of Michael J. Fox. First, a general look at his birth chart…

Michael was born June 9, 1961, at 12:15 AM in Edmonton, Canada. With the Sun in Gemini in the 5th House, it would be obvious to any astrologer seeing this chart (but not knowing who it was) to suspect some creative/artistic talent. Furthermore, Michael’s Sun and Fifth House are ruled by Mercury in Cancer, which takes positive aspects from Pluto and Neptune. The guy ain’t dumb, either. Helping out in this regard is his Third House. It’s ruled by Mars in Michael’s case, and his Mars is conjunct Uranus in Leo.

“Humor” is usually associated with Jupiter by most astrologers. Michael’s career calling (Midheaven) is in Sagittarius, and its ruling planet Jupiter is in (by Whole Sign Houses) is in the First House. Therefore, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say “Michael’s career path involves how he presents himself, probably in a humorous manner.”

But “having a sense of humor” and “being humorous” are two different things. And as I’ve begun to see over the years, Jupiter might play an important role in humor, but the signature of a comedian actually seems to be a strong Mars… as is the case with Sacha Baron Cohen and Amy Schumer and a lot of other comedians. Sigmund Freud theorized that humor is a redirected form of aggression — and even though Freud may be hopelessly out of style these days, maybe he wasn’t wrong about everything.

As for the current course Michael J. Fox’s career? This retirement is coming while Michael is in the middle of his second Saturn Return. His natal Saturn is at the powerful anaretic degree of Capricorn, the Sign that it rules. It was during Michael’s first Saturn Return in early 1991 when, while filming Doc Hollywood, he was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease — although he didn’t go public with that information until 1998. That was when Neptune passed over his Saturn, thus making his condition harder to hide.

As for Parkinson’s disease itself? It’s a complicated and difficult disease to understand, and we shouldn’t be too surprised that the astrology is likewise complicated. Drop by next time for more on that subject…
