Brian Warner, better known to the world as shock rocker Marilyn Manson, has been accused by actress Evan Rachel Wood (best known for Westworld) and at least four other women of abuse. And by “abuse,” I mean physical violence, sexual assault, and forced drug used, among other things.

Manson has always been a polarizing figure, and people’s reactions to this story that I’ve seen online are reflecting that. He has some hardcore fans reflexively defending him, and others who have always disliked him are (of course) on the attack. In theory, everyone should be entitled to some presumption of innocence. However, a dig through the record indicates that accusations of abuse aren’t new with Manson. It seems that, as was the case with Bill Cosby, the accusations had to reach a threshold level.

Does Manson’s birth chart show the potential for him being an abuser? Even trying to set aside any pre-judgement (and applying the “presumption of innocence” idea), it’s hard to not see danger signs. His Mars at four degrees Scorpio is square both his (First House, by Whole Sign Houses, Twelfth House by Placidus) Moon in Leo and his Mercury in Aquarius. His natal Sun is square a debilitated Saturn in Aries, and those planets rule his First and (traditionally) Seventh Houses respectively. This combination certainly would make for a deeply, perhaps violently, emotional nature. But of course if we wanted to, we could always say that he took that energy out via his art.
It’s too bad that the evidence says otherwise.

As for the future: one thing I’ve noticed with every case of a famous person who had an outbreak of scandal like this is that transits to the Midheaven always reflects how it will affect their career. Transiting Uranus is only now approaching the conjunction to his Midheaven in Taurus, and transiting Saturn will be in range of the square before the end of the month. This is not good for Manson at all, especially given that he’s already been dumped by his record company and lost a couple of acting gigs.
For me, one question remains. Can (or should) we make a distinction between an artist’s work and their behavior? Will I be able to return to enjoy listening to “The Beautiful People” or Manson’s cover of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” again?
Not today, I can’t.
