Some of you out there are reading this, looking at the time frame being covered are thinking something like “I was born then! This implies I’m having MY Pluto square! I wonder if that’s why things have been so unhinged for me the last while.” And those of you thinking that would be right (along with other transits you’re having). Honestly, it’s a good thing you know an astrologer.

Here are some noteworthy events from America’s Waning Pluto Square:

ECONOMICS: Although there was a recession in 1982, overall growth was good. This was the era when the concept of “trickle-down economics” or “Reaganomics” came into play. To summarize: cut taxes on rich people and companies, and those people and companies will have more spare cash to buy things with. This, in turn, benefits the people making the extra things those people and companies are buying. It appears to have worked for a while.

WAR: On the face of it, not much happening here other than the invasion of Grenada… which lasted a whole four days. Plenty of US intervention in foreign countries, openly or otherwise though: El Salvador, Nicaragua, Lebanon, Honduras, Iran…

HUMAN RELATIONS: It still wasn’t 100 percent awesome to be Black or LGBTQ or Indigenous in America, but the United Nations at least stepped up to the plate with “The World Program of Action Concerning the Disabled.” And the Equal Rights Amendment, although unratified by enough individual States, got an extension until June of 1982, at which time… it still didn’t pass.

DISEASE: This was the beginning of AIDS — the outbreak of a previously unknown virus. Features of this pandemic included: shaming of some minority groups, baseless conspiracy theories, quack cures, and people not taking common-sense precautions because they didn’t like being told what to do. Good thing that sort of nonsense couldn’t happen again today!
