Our Lady of the New MoonThe hype for The Twilight Saga: New Moon has begun. I caught a trailer for it this morning. Looks good, if you like Vampires, and who doesn’t?
And speaking of New Moons, I was wondering if you were aware of the power of the moon and the ‘new moon’ in particular? Here’s some fascinating information about the moon, and how you can utilize its powers to change your life!
From prehistoric times through the present, the moon has always grabbed hold of our imagination. The moon was our first timekeeper. The Moon causes the ebb and flow of the tides; and because our bodies are 75% water, the moon also effects our emotions, moods, sleep patterns, and for women, our menstrual cycles.
The moon’s cycle lasts 28 days and through those 28 days the Moon appears to transform itself, from the tiny sliver of a New Moon to the glistening luminosity of the Full Moon (14 days later) and then slowly back into the Dark Moon to end the cycle.
The New Moon (the waxing moon) is a time associated with beginnings and growth. If you want to bring new things into your life, to start a new project, to start anew – a fresh start to your healthy food program, the New Moon phase presents a strong foundation on which to begin.
The Full Moon (the waning moon) presents a time of power. It is an excellent time to become aware of your negative thoughts. It is a time to overcome obstacles, to relinquish bad habits. It is a time of clearing.

New Moon / Full Moon Ritual
A fun exercise that can bring awareness and intention to your life.
Moon Phases, June 2009
Full Moon – June 7, 18:12
Last Quarter – June 15, 22:15
New Moon – June 22, 19:35
First Quarter – June 29, 11:28

There are two ways to perform this ritual.
The simple way, and the deluxe version. The results will be the same. It’s all a matter of finding what works best for you.
The key to this exercise is this: A pen together with paper can prove a powerful life tool.
If you choose the simple way, you will simply need a pen and paper.
However, if you choose the full deluxe ritual, you will need the following:
Maroon, red, wine or orange colored paper
White, orange, maroon, red or wine pen or marker
One dark red or wine colored candle
One orange colored candle
Matches or lighter
A glass candle holder that holds both candles comfortably
Incense (your favorite scent)
Gemstone, such as Carnelian or Garnet (anything red)
Water or a candle snuffer
The simple way: On the day of the New Moon (any time that works for you) make a list of all things new that you want to bring into your life. There is no right or wrong way to do this. My New Moon list has covered everything from new glasses to a new home to a new point of view.
The deluxe version: Same as above, but you’ll need to use the ‘right’ color pen and paper, along with candles, etc. Again, you should write out list of all things you want to bring into your life. After you complete your list, pick three that deeply resonate. And then, place your list under the plate that holds the candles, and with gemstone in hand, while candles and incense are burning, ask the universe for your three wishes.
“I ask the universe to bring hot, steamy, love into my life.”
“I ask the universe to bring large sums of cash into my life.”
“I ask the universe to bring a new gourmet deli to my block that stocks light bread.”
These are examples, of course, and you should create your own list. And be specific!
Repeat the wishes out loud three times. Let the candles burn for as long as you are focused on your wishes. Do not blow them out. Either wet your fingers and pinch the flame out, or use a snuffer.
Keep your ‘ritual kit’ in a safe place. Save your list and when you write next month’s New Moon list, be sure to compare. You may find that your priorities have shifted or that some of your list has manifested.
The Full Moon ritual is basically the same, except this time, you want to make a list of everything you want out of your life. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. My list has ranged from ridding myself of bad hair days to illness.
“I ask the universe to rid me of bad hair days.”
It has been said that 75% of what we write down happens. I’m not sure if it’s pure magic or that when our desires come to light, our intention takes hold, and our actions change. Either way, change is a miraculous phenomenon that we are all capable of making happen.
