How Much Dead Weight Are You Carrying Around With You?
I’d read about a teacher who asked her students to bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes to class. For every person the student refused to forgive, they were to write the person’s name and date of upset on a potato and put it in their plastic bag.
Their bags began to fill up quickly. The moral of the story was that they were lugging around some pretty hefty amounts of anger that was clogging their spiritual development, big time.
I call it dead weight.
This got me to thinking. Some of us are carrying around a lot of anger at all the people in our lives who aren’t behaving the way we think they should; who clearly haven’t read the script we’ve written for them, etc. etc.
In addition, some of us are also cartin’ around barrelfuls of upset and anger at ourselves for our many dietary transgressions, for what we ‘should’ be doing, ‘could’ be doing and who knows what else.
Imagine what it might feel like if you dropped a potato in your proverbial plastic bag every time you were angry at others and/or upset with yourself and dragged it around with you all day and into the night. Whoa! That’s some heavy duty, weighty bag that is robbing you of your energy, focus and determination.
Let’s agree to let go of the anger at others and at ourselves. Let’s practice Our Lady of Weight Loss’s mantra: All Is Forgiven, Move On!!! Ahhhh, that does feel good, doesn’t it?!
