Disappointment: The feeling of sadness or displeasure caused by the non-fulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations.
This week, while working with one of my clients, she had a major aHa moment! She realized that one of the reasons that she allows herself to stay stuck is because the last time she stuck her head out there and went for ‘it,’ she was major league disappointed. Sort of crushingly disappointed.
It’s not like she had really failed. Au contraire. There were many successes, high points … moments of achievement, but they didn’t match the fantasy of what she wanted or what she thought ‘success’ might look like or feel like.
The disappointment was painful. Painful enough to stop her.
What to do? Keep going. Because the pain of regret, the pain of staying stuck and not putting ourselves out there is ultimately more painful than disappointment.
If I bring back only one gold people are going to say it’s a disappointment. But not too many of them own an Olympic gold medal so if I get one I’m going to be happy. ~ Michael Phelps
My failure, during the first five or six years of my art training, to get set in the right direction, and the disappointment which it caused me, drove me the more persistently into writing as an alternative. ~ Laurence Housman
Disappointment is a sort of bankruptcy – the bankruptcy of a soul that expends too much in hope and expectation. ~ Eric Hoffer
Disenchantment, whether it is a minor disappointment or a major shock, is the signal that things are moving into transition in our lives. ~ William Throsby Bridges
Enthusiasm is followed by disappointment and even depression, and then by renewed enthusiasm. ~ Murray Gell-Mann
If we will be quiet and ready enough, we shall find compensation in every disappointment. ~ Henry David Thoreau
The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire; the size of your dream; and how you handle disappointment along the way.~ Robert Kiyosaki
