Have you seen the very brilliant, gone viral, new Dove commercial entitled, “Dove Real Beauty Sketches?” #WeAreBeautiful
The commercial did an amazing job of illustrating that your every day woman perceives herself as less attractive than she is (even ugly). And, yes, the women that they interviewed and sketched were, in fact, prettier than they described themselves to be. They were also on the young side (depending on which side of the divide you are standing), mostly white, and there was not a heavy (a.k.a. overweight), monobrow (a.k.a. unibrow) amongst them!
Remembering that it was a commercial and not a documentary; remembering that they had to interview several dozen if not hundreds of women that were not featured in the commercial, remembering that it was edited, music was added, the sketch artist was hand-picked and had an uber-serious expression on his face; still, the commercial did give pause for thought.
How might I have described myself? How might you have described yourself?
I am fairly certain that I would have described the lines on my face as “laugh lines;” the lines between my eyes as “character lines,” as I have before. And, I imagine that I might ask the artist to run one of these quotes through my hair, or gently draped on my neck–“What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.”
What quotes would you weave through your hair, have your mouth speak, drape around your neck?
