While thumbing through old photos with Our Lady of Weight Loss at my side, I came across “Food Journal Apples,” which I snapped while sitting on a bench in front of ABC Carpets (New York City store that inspires. If you are in town put it on the top of your list.) I’d just come from the Union Square Green Market, had loaded up on the largest apples ever and was about to eat one, when I remembered my own good advice about food journaling.
Food Journaling keeps us honest. It helps us to keep track of what we eat and identify when and why we eat. In other words, it can shed light on your eating habits, and statistics show that those who keep food journals are more successful at losing weight and keeping it off than those who do not.
A picture is worth a thousand words. I wondered how illuminating it might be if I photographed everything (and I mean everything) that I ate. From full course meals to bites, licks and tastes. Would I eat less? Be more honest? Gain a different kind of insight that journal writing doesn’t provide?
I invite you to snap away. Take photos of everything you eat. Before you inhale the food, take a photo of it. At the very least “snapping” will slow you down and perhaps bring a new level of awareness, insights and resolutions about the way you eat!
