Are you against the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture? Do you wish that healthier foods were being served to our school children?
Yes? Then I’ve got some promising news for you!
During a media telephone briefing, hosted by the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming, which included representatives from Chartswell-Thompson; the nonprofit organizations School Foods Focus and the Healthy Schools Campaign; Whole Foods Market (affordable transport for the birds); and Miller Amish Country Poultry (the supplier) …
… The Chicago Schools announced that Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality (their main food-service company) will begin buying and serving chicken drumsticks from chickens raised locally and without antibiotics!
Why is this important?
1. Chicago First to Stand Tall: Chicago is the third-largest school district in the country, and the largest district in the country to endorse feeding our children anti-biotic free birds. Their desire to provide antibiotic-free meat to their students is a major step toward protecting their students and their student’s families.
2. Health vs. Money: Feeding our children meats that have been raised on antibiotic feeds has been fueled by money; for economic reasons. We’ve always known that antibiotic overuse on farms increases the presence of resistant bacteria in the environment.
3. Real Food vs. Nuggets: This healthful move brings real food back into schools. This chicken will be cooked in the schools themselves, rather than dishing out pre-formed nuggets and patties.
It’s about time, isn’t it? The health of our children should come first.
Where do you live? Do you know what your schools are feeding your children?
Isn’t it time to ask?
Spread the word … NOT the icing!
