Have you ever wondered about the origin of the phrase she’s got a “screw loose?”

The phrase, which means “something is wrong with the person” dates back to the 1780s, when the industrial revolution made mass production of textiles possible for the first time.

Huge mills sprang up but the new technology was yet to be perfected and it was difficult to keep all the machines running properly.

When a machine broke down or produced defective cloth, it was said to have “a screw loose” somewhere.  Interesting, yes?
