The more things change, the more they stay the same.  Case in point, this advertisement from Ladies Home Journal, April 1970: “The “Fat Time of Day,” when you’re really hungry and ready to eat two of everything.

This morning, I was thumbing through a stack of old magazines from the ’60’s and ’70’s that my dear friend, Betsy, picked up for me at a yard sale for a song.   The perfect gift for a Collagist (one who gets lost in the flow of cutting, pasting and creating an artistic product that is composed of both borrowed and original material).

While nutritional information and science may have “advanced” since April 1970, the obsession with weight loss remains the same. One “diet” ad after the next, page after page.

The advertisement from the “Sugar Information” people reads:

“The “fat time of day” is when you’re over-hungry and want to overeat.

“That’s when your appestat is turned up high.  To turn your appestat back to low, take a little sugar in a soft drink, or a candy bar, shortly before mealtime.

“Sugar turns into energy faster than any other food.

“Sugar helps keep your appetite down, your energy up — and — helps slip you safely past the ‘fat time of day.’

“Sugar…only 18 calories per teaspoon, and it’s all energy.

“*Appestat: A neural center in the hypothalamus believed to regular appetite.

Amusing, no?  Help yourself to a candy bar or a sugary drink?  HA!!!  Nevertheless, the more things change, the more they stay the same!
