Our Lady of Weight Loss and I were having a rather deep conversation about survival; exploring and observing how we all have different ways that we’ve developed over the years to navigate life. Some of us become introverts, some extroverts, some hide behind food, some hide behind intellect, some find adaptive ways to move through life while others develop rather maladaptive ways.

How do you manage, survive, navigate through life? Here are twelve (12) quotes about surviving that can help shed light on surviving!

No one can tell what goes on in between the person you were and the person you become. No one can chart that blue and lonely section of hell. There are no maps of the change. You just come out the other side.  Or you don’t. ~ Stephen King, The Stand

Your fear is 100% dependent on you for its survival. ~ Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth and Being Free

It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change. ~ Charles Darwin

All art is a kind of confession, more or less oblique. All artists, if they are to survive, are forced, at last, to tell the whole story; to vomit the anguish up. ~ James Baldwin

Does anything in nature despair except man? An animal with a foot caught in a trap does not seem to despair. It is too busy trying to survive. It is all closed in, to a kind of still, intense waiting. Is this a key? Keep busy with survival. Imitate the trees. Learn to lose in order to recover, and remember that nothing stays the same for long, not even pain, psychic pain. Sit it out. Let it all pass. Let it go. ~ May Sarton, Journal of a Solitude

We each survive in our own way. ~ Sarah J. Maas

Mankind is resilient: the atrocities that horrified us a week ago become acceptable tomorrow. ~ Joseph Heller

If quick, I survive.
If not quick, I am lost.
This is “death.” ~ Sun Tzu

Fear is a part of life. It’s a warning mechanism. That’s all. It tells you when there’s danger around. Its job is to help you survive. Not cripple you into being unable to do it. ~ Jim Butcher, Dead Beat

The strong survive, but the courageous triumph. ~ Michael Scott, The Warlock

It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value. ~ Arthur C. Clarke

“We’ll never survive!”
“Nonsense. You’re only saying that because no one ever has.” ~ William Goldman, the Princess Bride
