Say, have you heard the one about Jose, the fisherman who is desperate to provide for his family? He takes his boat out on a dark and stormy day. A hurricane comes in and Jose finds himself stranded on a deserted island. The first day he prays for God to rescue him. With eyes shut, he’s deep in prayer when a ship sails by. The second day he shouts non-stop affirmations of rescue so loudly that he doesn’t hear the helicopter overhead. The third day he vows to walk 1 million paces as an offering to the Lord. He trips over a rubber dinghy and kicks it aside so as not to disrupt his sacrificial plan.
Finally Jose calls out to God, “Why haven’t you answered my prayers?”
God replies from the heavens, “Aw, come on—I sent you a ship, a helicopter and a dinghy!”
Does your plan for “rescue” include keeping yourself open for the opportunities in your path? If money is tight, are you looking for a part-time job, or waiting for God to drop that extra cash into your open purse?
When faith is strong and prayer habits steady, it’s tempting to wait patiently for God to answer prayers. Remember the words of the wise man that said, “Pray as if everything depends on God, act as if everything depends on you.”
