In Medieval times, holy days, saints and feast days were marked on the calendar in Red. This originated from early illuminated manuscripts marking capital letters and highlighted words in Red ink. illuminated_letters80_normal.jpg

Since this blog is titled, “Red Letters – Living the Words of Jesus,” we are going to celebrate Red Letter Days throughout the week and focus on certain passages in Red ink. Today, the oldest and first Red Letter verse.
Do you know what gospel is the oldest? It’s the book of Mark. The very first words of Jesus in Red outline his entire ministry:
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15
A few thoughts – the Kingdom of God is here. Jesus came to inaugurate a new realm and a new reign. We all get the invitation to enter it, and it changes everything. In that realm is a taste of how the world will ultimately be transformed. There will be justice, no more pain and tears, evil is defeated, and the restoration of all things come to pass.
Second, despite the ways in which Christianity has been portrayed, this is good news. That’s the definition of the gospel. Good news for the poor, the rich, the sick, the outcast, the sinner (no matter the sin). It’s the greatest news the world has ever known. Believe it, and everything changes. How has the good news Jesus came to bring changed your life?
