George Clooney battles Malaria. How did he contract the disease? George Clooney was on the continent of Africa in Sudan to help push for diplomacy and avoid another genocide in the country according to People Magazine. This is Clooney’s second bout with Malaria.

I applaud his efforts, because George Clooney isn’t just saying he cares about the needs in the world, he’s actually out there doing something about it. Thank you George for caring and acting. More in the Christian and secular community should follow in your footsteps and do the same.

Malaria kills over a million people a year. In fact, according to Web MD for the nations where the disease is a problem, over 98% of the cases end in death. The cost for malaria medicine in most of these countries is less than $10. Imagine, the difference between life and death is a bag of coffee.

The cause of malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes.  About 10 to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito (but as few as 7 or as many as 30 days), a person develops fever, headache, chills, and vomiting.  This initial illness may be rather mild — but it’s a big mistake to ignore it.  If not treated within 24 hours, malaria progresses to a much more severe illness.

If not treated immediately, a person with malaria tends to have 6- to 10-hour attacks of chills, fever, vomiting, and body aches every two or three days.  This can progress to severe disease with infection of the brain, destruction of red blood cells, inability to breathe, kidney failure, and other life-threatening outcomes.

The malaria parasite is infamous for hiding in the liver. Relapses often occur after months or years without symptoms.
