A very interesting turn of events is occurring right now in Haiti. Jean Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier, Haiti’s former dictator, returned to the capital after he fled 20 years ago.
The video below by The Associated Press shows Mr. Duvalier escorted from an upscale hotel outside Port-au-Prince. He is waving to supporters as they shout, “We are with you!” and call him “president.” Mr. Duvalier inherited power from his tyrannical father Francois Duvalier, known as ‘Papa Doc,” 40 years ago at the age of 19.
In an article by The Economist entitled, Baby Doc’s Back Mr Duvalier is called “a torturer, kidnapper and thief–although a less brutal ruler than his father and predecessor.” It was unknown why he wasn’t immediately arrested. Today he was taken into custody as Duvalier is accused of corruption and embezzelment from crimes 25 years ago.
What does this mean for Haiti? At this point, no one knows. But this small country has been shaken to its core and the return of a former dictator can mean nothing good. Pray for Haiti.
