One of the best Ted talks I have seen is by a professor named Brene Brown on Shame and Vulnerability. As many of you know, I am doing my Doctorate at George Fox University on Hope and the Poor and I’m utilizing the same research method that Dr. Brene Brown used for her research on shame. Thanks to Jody Landers for the initial heads up on Brene Brown.
The essence of her talk is the belief most of us have deep inside regarding feelings of inferiority. The, ‘I’m not enough’ belief or feeling of shame, is underpinned with an avoidance of vulnerability, and that in order for connection to happen we have to allow ourselves to be seen. When we numb emotions like shame, fear, and unworthiness, we also numb joy, peace, and fulfillment.
Everyone has shame it’s just that some of us are better at hiding it than others. All of us are inclined to compare ourselves to others. Our value comes from how we think they see us. If that view is marred, we give tell ourselves there is something wrong with us. We can be whole and live shame free. None of us should walk in shame. Watch this video, it may change your life.
