They are saying he ran toward the sound of the guns.

Yesterday’s deadly shootings in Tucson, Ariz. have left 6 dead, and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in critical condition. The alleged shooter killed not only a federal judge, but a nine-year-old girl (granddaughter of Dallas Green). Christina Taylor Green was born on September 11, 2001. She had been elected to the student council of her school and was there specifically to meet Congresswoman Giffords.

In the search for answers of why Jared Lee Laughner would open fire on Congresswoman Giffords, some have criticized Sarah Palin for her targeting of Gifford’s district using the graphics of a crosshairs, the kind you’d use to target a shoot someone. You can see that graphic here.

But what has become clear is that a 20-year-old intern named Daniel Hernandez ran toward the sound of the shooting guns.

He told ABC’s “This Week” Anchor Christiane Amanpour: “When I heard the gunshots, my first instinct was to head toward the congresswoman to make sure that she was okay. Once I saw that she was down, and there were more than one victim, I went ahead and started doing the limited triage that I could with what I had.”

He held up Giffords’ head so she wouldn’t choke on her own blood, and then used grocery smocks to bandage up the other wounded.

Heroic and commendable actions in a time of great fear and uncertainty. Hernandez ran toward firing bullets to save those around him.

Hernandez’ actions teach us that any of may be called on to act heroically. Even in a routine Congressional appearance at a grocery store.

Giffords and others may owe their lives to Hernandez’ actions yesterday.
