I appear to have my Internet connection back again and I’m really busy catching up on all my email and all the things I wanted to post including the news about Survivor. Does anyone watch it? I usually watch it but I was so busy last year (I took three very hard classes in the fall) that I didn’t finish out the season, which was the first time that has happened. I’ve watched every season since the series started.
But I was in shock when I heard on the radio that they were going to do a Survivor with four teams based on race:
The 20 players will initially be divided into four groups based on their ethnicity – Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American and Caucasian. The tribes will merge at some point later in the game.
“I think at first glance, when you just hear about it, it could sound like a stunt, especially with the way reality (TV) has gone,” Survivor host Jeff Probst told CBS television in the US.
“But that’s not what we’re doing here. The idea for this actually came from the criticism that Survivor is not ethnically diverse enough. … We said, ‘Let’s turn that criticism into creative for the show, and I think it fits in perfectly with what Survivor does. It’s a social experiment, and this adds another layer to the experiment.”
Though this may be an interesting concept, it’s wrong to pit the races against each other, there is too much focus on race in this country, as it is. I hope kids won’t be rooting for teams because they identify with their race.
I think that I’ll root for the group that I always root for (until they make me nuts when they act nuts), the Christians 🙂
