One of the things I appreciated the most in my doctrine of God class was focusing on the attributes of God and learning about doctrines like his simplicity. I really never thought about the fact that God is not complex and made of parts. If God were made up of parts that would mean that some part of him was not within his control, he would not be perfect. It would also mean that he was not a se (independent). But if God is not made of parts, how can we understand the Trinity? Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three persons who are one essence. The essence is simple and without parts, the persons are distinct from each other but are not a part. If you don’t fully grasp the distinction then you are beginning to understand the maker of the heavens and earth 🙂 In other words it’s a mystery. Here’s an interesting video that makes us think about who God is:Every once in awhile it’s good to stop and think about God so what we don’t take him for granted or think that we really understand completely who he is.(via)
