So, he suggests that we switch to more electric vehicles and increase in wind, solar and geothermal energy? Wind and sun power cannot be stored on the gird, it’s only good for the days that it’s windy or sunny and electric cars don’t go very fast or far before they need to be recharged, plus it’s moving the gas problem to the utilities, not ending it. And now you’ve added coal to the mix unless you’re willing to go nuclear. So, I’m asking in this thread, what would you suggest we switch to? It’s really easy to demigod this topic but it’s another thing to actually come up with a solution. Here’s his challenge:
“I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years,” Gore told thousands of people who packed into a conference hall near the White House to hear the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner speak.
So, what can we switch to that would end our dependence on oil in ten years?
And then there’s this:
The chief obstacle to achieving 100 percent renewable energy in 10 years was a dysfunctional US political system that panders to special interests, said Gore
If it was possible to come up with something marketable, people would be doing it regardless of what Congress did. I suspect that there are many companies working on this problem because the first one who finds a marketable product will reap huge rewards. The fact that we don’t have anything yet demonstrates how hard it is to come up with something that produces energy on demand.
And this:
Gore drew his loudest cheers from a crowd packed with environmentalists when he denounced efforts, backed by President Bush, McCain and congressional Republicans, to boost oil drilling. Gore said, “It is only a truly dysfunctional system that would buy into the perverse logic that the short-term answer to high gasoline prices is drilling for more oil 10 years from now.”
Um…isn’t what he’s proposing 10 years away as well (at the very least if ever) and he’s not proposing anything that will help lower the price now and neither are the Democrats. There is no solution for lower prices now (except if the speculators think that we are ready to address the problem by exploring other sources for oil), the Democrats and the environmentalists have seen to that and they are making sure that we have no solutions in the future as well.
BTW, here’s what a guy who runs a utility has to say about Gore’s suggestions:
“We cannot do the job with renewables and energy efficiency alone,” he said. “We have to have a balanced energy portfolio that includes all those things in even higher percentages, but also has to include nuclear. And we frankly think that nuclear should be increased.”
So, if we really want to end our dependence on oil, are you ready to go nuclear? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
