I couldn’t believe it when Doug told me about this story:
Two groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall, just hours after the police chief declared a crime emergency in the city in response to a string of violence that included the killing of a British activist.
The tourist-friendly National Mall, which is under the jurisdiction of Park Police rather than D.C. police, is usually considered safe. But the recent crimes against tourists have raised calls for a larger police presence.
We had no problems whatsoever. We were even near Georgetown and walked to the Metro there at night. We thought everyone in DC was really nice. My daughter and I were about to board a train and the woman we were sitting next to asked if we were forgetting our hats (and we were). We didn’t see anything that would cause concern and we were walking around after dark. Thank the Lord we had such a wonderful vacation and we didn’t experience problems like this.
I hope they get this under control because it really is so beautiful being there with all the monuments to our nation’s history. I would hate to see someone’s vacation ruined and to have someone killed just because they came to America is awful. Imagine having a traveling advisory against visiting our nation’s capital. That’s not good.
