Well, it looks like their investigation is over and it appears that he is guilty:
The Rev. Ted Haggard was forced out Saturday as leader of the megachurch he founded after a board determined the influential evangelist had committed “sexually immoral conduct,” the church said Saturday.
Haggard had resigned two days earlier as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, where he held sway in Washington and condemned homosexuality, after a Denver man named Mike Jones claimed to have had drug-fueled trysts with him.
“Our investigation and Pastor Haggard’s public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct,” the New Life Church’s Overseer Board said in a statement.
Haggard on Friday acknowledged paying Jones for a massage and for methamphetamine, but said he did not have sex with him and did not take the drug.
The church’s statement said the investigation would continue, to determine how extensive Haggard’s misconduct was.
This has got to be really hard on him and his family. And on the members of his church. It is really hard to put your trust in a leader and have him stumble in such a public manner. How embarrassing for his wife to know that her husband paid for sex with a man. And the kids have to live with the knowledge that their dad sinned in such a public way. And Haggard fell from a very powerful position, he must feel really stupid.
And Mike Jones must be relieved to be vindicated by the church. Admitting that he did it for political gain effected his credibility but he should be happy now that he proved what a hypocrite Haggard was. But will he get what he really wanted? Will this defeat the amendment? Not likely. It will probably pass as it has in every other state in which it was voted on by the people.
And this is really wishful thinking:
“This is one more factor that could increase the disillusionment of evangelicals with prominent leaders on the Christian right and with the political process as a whole, and some may conclude that perhaps their forebears were wise to be wary about politics.”
And here’s an interesting bit of news, Haggard was a global warming activist. Will his fall from grace impact the left at all? Will it discourage them from voting? 🙂
